How to Create a Robust Localization Process

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

Introduction

The localization process is the lifecycle of a digital product, from design to launch and beyond. It’s not just about translation but also about making sure that products are ready for end users in different regions who may have different languages and needs than people in developed countries or first-wave adopters. This can be challenging—but it doesn't have to be. In this article, I’ll provide you with some guidelines on how to create an effective localization process when developing a web app or SaaS product so that you can ensure success for your global audience from day one.

What is Localization Process

Localization is the process of adapting a product, content, or service to a specific country or region. It is a crucial step in the global expansion of your business and can be done in-house or by an external agency.

What steps should your localization process have?

Your localization process should have the following characteristics:

  • A clear starting point

  • A clear endpoint

  • A clear goal

  • A clear structure (e.g., steps) to get from starting point to the end point

  • A clear process for delivering your product or service in a language not your own (e.g., translation, editing, proofreading)

  • An outcome at which you can measure success

Top Tips for Building a Bulletproof Localization Process

As you begin the process of building a localization process, there are several things to keep in mind.

  • Understand the Process. This is a daunting task, but it’s important that you understand exactly what’s involved in localizing your product and what steps are needed to make sure that it is done right. It's also important to know when and where different parts of the process should be conducted (e.g., design vs. QA). Defining this upfront will help ensure that everyone is on board with how they're going to get involved in bringing your product into new markets.

  • Have a Clear Plan & Scope Out What You'll Need: Once you've got a handle on what needs doing and why, start mapping out exactly how everything will work together—from initial concepting through final testing and release—and figure out how much time each part of this plan will take from start to finish; this way everyone knows where they stand at any given point during development (and can adjust accordingly if necessary).

  • Don't Cut Corners: I’ve been tempted before by trying something new or using an unexpected resource because it seemed easier than doing things “the right way”—but when working with sensitive data like personal information about our users' names (which could include contact info), addresses/phone numbers etc., there are specific laws around privacy protection which need protecting at all costs! So whether its securing information inside databases or hardening passwords so hackers don't steal them after breaching security measures put into place by developers; these safeguards need to be taken seriously

In order to implement a robust localization process, you need to understand what the process is and how to build one.

Before you start any process, it’s important to define exactly what your goals are. A lot of people jump into a new project or state of mind without setting tangible goals first. Instead, they focus on what other people’s goals might be, which can lead to confusion and frustration.

This is especially true when it comes to creating a robust localization process for your company or app. There are many ways that you can go about doing this, but it's important that you don't get overwhelmed by all the possibilities and instead focus on defining your own personal goal(s). A good way to do this is by asking yourself: “If I could achieve [X] in 3-6 months from now with my localization efforts, how would that make me feel? Would I consider it successful? Would I want more? Less?" Once you answer these questions and set some well-defined objectives for yourself, then it becomes easier than ever before!

Conclusion

As you can see, localization process is a complex and multifaceted concept. There are many different ways to approach it, and no one-size-fits-all solution. But by following the guidelines I’ve outlined here and ensuring that your localization process encompasses all of the key points, you will be well on your way to building a robust process.
